This year ELSA Brussel organizes its first negotiation Competition. The competition will take place on the 14th of March and will be held at the VUB Campus.
Most disputes in which lawyers are involved do not end up in the courts. Instead, they are settled by way of some form of compromise between the parties — a negotiated agreement. In order to ensure that a client’s best interests are protected in the context of a negotiated, out-of-court agreement, it is imperative for lawyers to possess effective negotiation skills. This applies on both a national and an international level.
Participants will compete against each other in teams consisting of two persons. In advance of the competition, each team will receive 2 cases, which consist of some mutual facts, give to both parties, and some individual, confidential facts that are important for the party they represent. Teams will be required to negotiate the resolution of a dispute.
ELSA Brussel will make sure of a proper introduction to the art of negotiation, by providing a negotiation workshop during the morning. The competition will exist of 3 rounds and will take place in the afternoon and evening. After each round a couple of teams will be eliminated. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. The winners and semi-finalists will also be rewarded.
Purpose of the competition:
The purpose of the competition is to:
1° Promote greater interest in and awareness of legal negotiation among law students;
2° Provide a forum through which law students can learn the techniques of effective legal negotiation;
3° Facilitate interaction between students from different countries and jurisdictions;
4° Enable law students to learn to build strategies and use methods that will further enhance a client’s best interests; and
5° Enable law students to enhance their existing negotiation skills.
The competition is open to law* students in their third bachelor year and master students, enrolled at a Belgian university. Applicants must have good knowledge of the English language, since the entire competition will be held in English.
* Students who do not have a legal background may be taken into consideration during the selection, depending on their motivation, CV and number of applicants.
