The research presentation Speak On, Brussels, is part of the ongoing doctoral research project Right to the City by filmmaker Robbrecht Desmet. The project consists of the production of a series of audiovisual ethnographies of the metropolitan landscape of Brussels. Departing from the screening of two recent film works on the city, this two day presentation is set to reflect on the current state of Brussels, the 21st century capital of Europe, and its rapidly changing social, political, economic, artistic landscape. Fifty years after Henri Lefebvre published his influential Le droit à la ville, what answer do we find to the question of what kind of Brussels we want? A question that can not be divorced from that of what kind of social ties, relationship to nature, lifestyle, technologies and aesthetic values we desire. The right to the city is far more than the invididual liberty to access urban resources: it is a right to change ourselves by changing the city.
For the occasion Robbrecht Desmet will present his film On a Clear Day with a live performance of its original soundtrack by Nabihah Iqbal.
