MADENSUYU 25: SUYU MAKINESI FEST
Madensuyu has been around for 25 years and that (do we really have to complete our sentence?) must be celebrated, of course. Not only with an extra-long set by Pieterjan Vervondel and Stijn Ylode De Gezelle, or with the screening of the moving documentary ‘Rabot’, but also with a Brussellian/Iraqi party band. And especially: with an actual classical element. A classical section? Indeed!
It’s not so surprising really, as De Morgen just recently described their latest album ‘Current’ as an ‘oververhitte vrijpartij tussen punk en neo-klassiek’. In 2013, they already intentionally nodded to Italian classical composer Pergolesi too (with the album title ‘Stabat Mater’). He was the man who translated the 13th century poem of the same name into musical splendour.
That's why Madensuyu invited renowned soprano Muriel Bruno to their Suyu Makinesi Fest, to interpret a few classical works by the likes of Vivaldi, Pergolesi, Händel and Purcell. Muriel Bruno brings along her regular pianist Johan Dupont plus Anaïs Brullez as second voice.
The festivities will begin with Brussels’ Babylon Trio, three Iraqi musicians who fled their homeland in 2016 to escape the gruesome scenes of war. Babylon Trio plays an exciting and electrified mix of contemporary Iraqi music styles like chobi chobi, dabke and maqam. Let the googling begin.
